1639 Map of New Netherlands (NYC)

1639 Map of New Netherlands (NYC)

from $19.99

One of the earliest maps of the NYC region. This map of New-Netherland and Manhattan (New York City region) in 1639 was drawn only 13 years after Peter Minuit arrived in New Amsterdam (Manhattan) to oversee Dutch colonization efforts for the Dutch West India company. Minuit had infamously "purchased" the island from the native Algonquin tribe who did not believe in land ownership for approximately $24 in trinkets. The pictoral map shows buildings, points of interest, water depths, prominent residents, the fort at the Battery, and the names of the islands that are today’s boroughs.
